Since 2011, the DCSEU has delivered financial incentives, technical assistance, and information to tens of thousands of District residents and businesses, helping them to save millions of dollars on their energy costs. As the anchor of the region’s hunger-relief infrastructure, the Capital Area Food Bank provides over 60 million meals annually to communities across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The Department of General Services is the result of the consolidation of capital construction and real property management functions of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization (OPEFM), Department of Real Estate Services (DRES), Municipal Facilities: Non-Capital Agency (ZXO), Fire and Emergency Management Services (FEMS), Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the facilities management responsibilities of the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). Consequently, DGS carries out a broad range of real estate management functions. In addition to managing capital improvement and construction programs for a variety of District government agencies, DGS also executes real property acquisitions by purchase or lease, disposes of property through sale, lease or other authorized method, manages space in buildings and adjacent areas, and provides building management services for facilities owned or operated by the District.
